אני לא מוצא את עצמי בין הלהקות האופנתיות להרכבי הדינוזאורים שמביאים לארץ בזמן האחרון - לא רוצה למשכן את הגיטרה כדי לראות את האבנים המתגלגלות ולא משתגע על קאלטס. לכן אני ממש שמח לקראת ההופעה של Yuck.
אלבום הבכורה של יאק חגג את הרוק האלטרנטיבי מתחילת הניינטיז של להקות כמו Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, ו-Pavement. דילגתי עליהם בהתחלה בגלל הייפ מוגזם ותיוג הלהקה כמושיעת הרוקנרול, אבל כששמעתי את המוזיקה גיליתי שירים קליטים של ארבעה אקורדים שזמזמתי בהנאה בחדר המדרגות; אפילו בחרתי בו כאחד מהאלבומים האהובים עלי מ-2011. אבל אבוי! סולן יאק, Daniel Blumberg, עזב את הלהקה לטובת פרויקט הסולו שלו Hebronix. הרבה מהקסם של הלהקה היה תלוי בקול הקולי (אפשר לקרוא כ-"בקוֹל הקוּלי" או "בקוּל הקוֹלי") שלו והשירים המשונים-חמודים שהוא כתב ולא היה ברור איך הם ימשיכו. אז Max Bloom, גיטריסט הלהקה וחבר ילדות של דניאל, תפס את עמדת הפרונטמן והלהקה שחררה את אלבומה השני "Glow & Behold" בשנה שעברה, אלבום יותר אנרגטי וצבעוני שהמשיך את הגיטרות הגראנג'יות של קודמו עם קצת שוגייז ורגישות.
תפסתי את מקס לראיון קצר במייל לקראת ההופעה בבארבי ולפני שחרור אי פי חדש של יאק:
בסשן החי של הלהקה ב-KEXP אמרת ש-2013 היתה רכבת הרים רגשית. מה קורה ב-2014 עד כה?
"בדיוק סיימנו סיבוב הופעות של חודשיים באמריקה ואירופה שהיה ממש טוב, עכשיו אנחנו פשוט כותבים מוזיקה חדשה ומופיעים בכמה פסטיבלים, ואחרי זה נמשיך לכתוב ולהקליט חומר חדש עד סוף השנה".
בדיוק סיימתם טור באיסטנבול וכבר קבעתם הופעות לחודשים הבאים. איך החיים בדרכים בשביל הלהקה? מה אתה עושה כדי לא להשחק?
"כרגע מאוד מספק וכיף לי להופיע. אני חושב שחשוב לנסות שיהיו לך חיים די פשוטים בטור. בדרך כלל אני לא יוצא לשתות ולחגוג, אני פשוט מנסה להשאר בריא ולשמור על ראש טוב וזה עושה את החיים בדרכים להרבה יותר פשוטים. בחודשיים האחרונים ראינו "Breaking Bad" באדיקות, זה גרם לנסיעות ארוכות בוואן לעבור די מהר".
הגיטרות של יאק נשמעות מעולה. באיזה סוג של ציוד אתה משתמש? יש לך מרכיבים סודיים?
"אין לי סודות או שום דבר כזה! אני משתמש היום באותם הפדאלים כמו שהשתמשתי מאז שהקמנו את הלהקה. נראה לי שעבדתי די קשה על הסאונד של הגיטרה שלי כשהתחלנו. יש לי כמה פדאלים של אוברדרייב שאני משאיר דלוקים כל הזמן, ואז אני פשוט משתמש באוברדרייבים שונים ודיסטורשנים מעליהם, פלוס כמה אפקטים. אני אוהב להשאיר את זה כמה שיותר פשוט כדי שלא אצטרך לחשוב מה אני עושה בזמן ההופעה. אני חושב שזה דבר אחד שיהיה לך סאונד טוב לגיטרה אבל הדבר הכי חשוב הוא באיזה צורה אתה מנגן".
אתם עומדים לשחרר EP חדש בשם "Southern Skies". איך הקלטתם אותו ומה נתן השראה למוזיקה?
"שמעתי באותו הזמן המון Cocteau Twins ו-Jeff Buckley. זה הוקלט בסוף השנה שעברה, הקלטנו הכל בחדר החזרות שלנו בלונדון. נראה לי שה-EP הוא סוג של ניסוי בשבילנו, הצורה שבה אנחנו עושים מוזיקה נמצאת בהחלט במעבר. כתבתי כמה מהשירים בעצמי אבל כתבנו את 'Another One' ביחד כלהקה וזה משהו שלא ניסינו אף פעם".
שמעתי שאתה מתכנן לקחת כמה ימי חופש בתל אביב אחרי ההופעה. איך אתה רוצה לבלות אותם?
"יש לי המון חברים ומשפחה שגרים בישראל, אז אני הולך לבלות כמה ימים בירושלים כדי לבקר אותם, לנסוע לים המלח, ואז לבלות את שאר הזמן בתל אביב. אני ממש מצפה לבוא בחזרה, לא הייתי בישראל מאז שהייתי בן 16!"

I just can't find myself between the fashionable and the dinosaur bands that perform in Israel lately - don't want to sell my guitar to go see The Rolling Stones and I'm not crazy about Cults. That's why I'm really happy that Yuck are coming to Tel Aviv.
Yuck's debut album celebrated early nineties alternative rock by bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and Pavement. At first I ignored them due to exaggerated hype and the band being labeled as the saviors of rock'n'roll, but when I actually listened to the music I discovered catchy four chord songs that I liked to hum while walking down the stairs from my apartment; I even picked it as one of my favorite albums of 2011. But alas! Yuck's lead singer, Daniel Blumberg, left the band for his solo project Hebronix. A lot of the band's charm depended on his cool vocals and the strange-cute songs that he wrote. It wasn't clear how the band could go on, but they did - Max Bloom, the band's lead guitar player and also Daniel's childhood friend, stepped up to become the new front man and the band released their second album "Glow & Behold" last year, a more energetic and colorful effort that continued the dirty guitars from the debut and added shoegaze and sensitivity.
I caught Max for a short email interview about a week and a half before the show and a soon to be released EP:
In your the band’s live KEXP session you said that 2013 has been an emotional roller coaster. What’s happening in 2014 so far?
"We've just finished a 2 month tour in America and Europe which was really great, now we're just writing some new music and playing some festivals, and then we'll probably carry on writing and recording new stuff until the end of the year".
You've just ended a tour in Istanbul and already have shows set for the next few months. How’s life on the road for the band? What do you do to keep from burning out?
"I find touring very enjoyable and fulfilling at the moment. I think its important to try and have quite a simple life on tour. I don't usually go out drinking and partying, I just try and keep healthy and keep a level head and it makes life a lot better on the road. For the past 2 months we've been watching breaking bad quite religiously, that made long journeys in the van pass quite quickly too".
Yuck has a great guitar sound. What kind of equipment do you use? Do you have any secret ingredients?
"I don't really have any secrets or anything! I use the same pedals now as I have done since we started the band. I guess I worked quite hard on my guitar sound when we first started. I have a couple of overdrive pedals that I keep on the whole time, and then I just use different overdrives and distortions on top of those, plus a couple of effects. I like to keep things as simple as possible so I don't have to think about what I'm doing live. I think its one thing having a good guitar sound but the way you play is the most important thing".
You’re about to release a new EP called “Southern Skies”. How was it recorded, and what influenced the music?
"At the time I was listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins and Jeff Buckley. It was recorded at the end of last year, we recorded everything in our rehearsal studio in London. I guess this EP was kind of an experimentation for us, the way we make music is definitely in transition. I wrote some of the songs myself but we wrote 'Another One' together as a band and that was something we had never tried before".
I've heard that you plan to take some days off in Tel Aviv after the show. How would you like to spend them?
"I have a lot of friends and family who live in Israel, so I'm going to spend a couple of days in Jerusalem to visit them, go to the dead sea, and then spend the rest of the time in Tel Aviv. I'm really looking forward to going back, I haven't been to Israel since I was 16!"

צר לי להגיד שאני לא מתחבר כל כך לאלבום החדש שלהם כמו לקודם בעיקר בגלל הסולן החדש.
הגיטרות הן אותם גיטרות, זה מרגיש דומה מאוד אבל זה פשוט לא נשמע טוב כמו האלבום ההוא.
קשה לי להעריך איך השירים הקודמים ישמעו עם הסולן החדש, אבל אין מצב שאפספס את ההופעה
