ראיון עם The KVB: השפעות נוירו-פילוסופיות / The KVB Interview: Neuro-Philosophical Influences

אחת מהתלבושות של ליידי גאגא, מלאך דיסקו ביזארי שכזה, סימלה את ההגעה שלה לארץ - יונת השלום שמבסרת את סוף מבול הטילים והביטולים. חבל רק שלא היה לה עלה זית אירוטי בפה.

בגזרת האינדי The KVB, צמד שוגייז/סינת' פופ לונדוני, יחזיר אותנו לשגרה של הופעות איכות ב-1.10 בארבי תל אביב. The Soft Moon, שנתנו פה הופעה פנטסטית בשנה שעברה, היו אמורים להגיע איתם אך ביטלו מסיבות מובנות. וואטאבר. אני מעדיף לבהות בנעל החצי מלאה.

תפסתי את ניק וקאט מההרכב לראיון קצר במייל. התברר שעשיתי טעויות מביכות בריסרץ', אבל גם שאלות מפגרות יכולות לתת תשובות חכמות.

אז, אתם צמד מבריטניה ואפילו קראתי שהוספתם מתופף להרכב. איך נפגשתם והתחלתם לעשות מוזיקה?

ניק: "לא הוספנו מתופף או שום אדם אחרים, אז אנחנו עדיין צמד! למרות שהיה לנו שיתוף פעולה חד פעמי עם Joe Dilworth, שניגן תופים ב-EP האחרון שלנו… שנינו נפגשנו בהופעה בלידס ב-2010. עשיתי מוזיקה כאמן סולו וניגנתי בלהקות לתקופה די ארוכה לפני כן וקאט למדה אמנות באוניברסיטת Goldsmiths בלונדון. השותפות היצירתית נוצרה בהדרגה: אני יצרתי מוזיקה לסרטים שלה והיא יצרה אמנות חזותית למוזיקה שלי, וכל זה הוביל בסופו של דבר להופעת 'TheKVB' הראשונה בלונדון בסוף 2011".

הקלטתם את "Out of Body EP" עם אנטון ניוקומב מלהקת The Brian Jonestown Massacre באולפנים שלו בברלין. מה למדתם במהלך העבודה איתו ואיך זה השפיע על הלהקה?

ניק: "אנטון לא היה מעורב בהקלטות, הוא היה באמריקה באותו הזמן. עבדנו עם טכנאי הבית Fabien Leseure באולפני A Records".

המוזיקה שאתם עושים נשמעת מאוד אפלה וסינמטית. איזה סוג של דברים בחיים נותנים לכם השראה?

קאט: "קשה לענות על זה כי כל דבר עושה את דרכו ומחלחל פנימה בין אם אנחנו יודעים את זה באופן מודע או לא… אבל הייתי אומרת שטיולים, אמנות חזותית/סרטים, ספרים ונויורו-פילוסופיה משחקים איזשהו תפקיד בתוספת לנסיון אישי. אנחנו מעדיפים לעבוד בתנאים מבודדים ובלי יותר מדי הסחות דעת".

הופעתם ברחבי אירופה ואפילו הגעתם כל הדרך לרוסיה, אמריקה ואוסטרליה. מה היה המקום הכי משונה שהופעתם בו בינתיים ומה קרה שם?

קאט: "כל מקום היה ייחודי ופגשנו המון אנשים טובים ונדיבים בטורים שלנו. לגבי מקומות 'מוזרים' - ההופעה האחרונה שלנו במוסקווה היתה בפסטיבל מוזיקה אלקטרונית על אי מלאכותי - זה היה עצום, מבוך סוריאליסטי של מיצגי אמנות ובמות! כשהיינו שם בחור מקומי לקח אותנו להפלגה קטנה בסירה על נהר המוסקווה לאור השקיעה עם Rrose, Ben UFO, ו-Stellar Om Source והוא דיבר בצורה כל כך חיובית על העתיד ועל המדינה שלו - זה היה מרענן.

"היתה לנו גם הופעה מעולה במבצר ארטילריה ישן ב-Padova, איטליה בשנה שעברה. נכנסים לשם דרך מנהרה עמומה לחלל רחב בצורת כיפה שיש לו ריוורב באופן טבעי, ובזמן שניגנו שם היו כמה הקרנות בגובה 10 מטר בניגוד יפיפיה לקירות הלבנים".

היה לנו קיץ נוראי פה בישראל בגלל המלחמה שהרסה גם את המוזיקה: הרבה הופעות בוטלו בגלל בעיות בטחוניות. אפילו The Soft Moon - שכבר היו פה בשנה שעברה - החליטו לבטל את ההופעה שלהם. מה שמעתם על תל אביב ואיך אתם מרגישים לגבי ההגעה שלכם לכאן?

ניק: "שמענו דברים מעולים על הקהל בתל אביב, אז אנחנו נורא שמחים שהזמינו אותנו לנגן שם. לפעמים לא בטוח שההופעה תקרה, אבל תמיד נשארנו מלאי תקווה שבסוף השלום ינצח".

One of Lady Gaga's outfits, some kind of bizarre disco angel, symbolized her show in Israel - Noah's dove which brought the end of the flood of rockets and cancellations. Too bad she didn't have an erotic olive leaf in her mouth.

Back in the indie scene, The KVB, Londoner shoegaze/synthpop duo, will bring us back to the routine of quality shows at Tel Aviv's Barby on 1.10. The Soft Moon, who had a fantastic show here last year, were also supposed to come but cancelled due to obvious reasons. Whatever. I prefer to gaze at the half full side of the shoe.

I caught Nick and Kat from the band for a short email interview. Apparently I made some embarrassing mistakes in my research, but stupid questions can still lead to smart answers.

So, you’re a duo out of the UK and I even read that you added a drummer to your outfit. How did you meet and start making music?

Nick: “We haven't added a drummer or any other members, so we're still very much a duo! Although we did have a one-off collaboration with Joe Dilworth, who contributed drums to on our last EP.... The two of us met at a show in Leeds in 2010, I had been making music solo and in bands for quite a while before that and Kat was studying fine art at Goldsmiths University in London. The working partnership started gradually, I contributed music to her films and she contributed visuals to my music ... all of which eventually lead to the first 'TheKVB' show in London late 2011.”

You recorded Out Of Body EP with Anton Newcombe from The Brian Jonestown Massacre at his Berlin studios. What did you learn while working with him and how did it affect your band?

Nick: “Anton wasn't involved in the recording, he was away in the US at the time. We worked with the in house engineer at 'A' Records studio - Fabien Leseure.“

The music that you make sounds very dark and cinematic. What kind things in life are you inspired by?

Kat: “That's hard to answer as everything makes its way and seeps in whether we consciously realise it or not... but would argue travelling, visual art/film, books and neuro-philosophy in addition to personal experience play a part. We prefer to work in isolated conditions and without too many distractions.”

You’ve toured extensively in Europe and even made it all the way to Russia, America and Australia. What has been the weirdest place where you’ve performed so far and what happened there?

Kat: “Everywhere has been unique and we've met many kind and generous people on tour. As far as 'weird' places - our recent show in Moscow was at an electronic festival held on a man made island- it was a huge, surreal labyrinth of art installations and stages! Whilst there we were taken on a small boat ride down at sunset down the Moskva river with Rrose, Ben UFO & Stellar Om Source by a local man who spoke so positively about the future and his country- it was refreshing.

“We also had a great show at an old artillery fort in Padova, Italy last year. You entered through a dimly lit tunnel to a cavernous, domed space which naturally had its own reverb, and whilst we played there were multiple 10m tall projections which contrasted beautifully against the brick walls”.

We had an awful summer here in Israel because of the war which also destroyed the music: a lot of shows got cancelled because of obvious security concerns. Even The Soft Moon - who came here last year - decided to cancel their show. What have you heard about Tel Aviv and how do you feel about coming to play here?

Nick: “We've heard great things about the audiences in Tel Aviv, so we are very happy to have been invited to play there. At times it’s been touch and go as to whether the show would go ahead, but always remained hopeful that peace would prevail.“
