התרשמתי בפרימוורה משלוש בחורות שהסתובבו בכנס של הפסטיבל בשמלות תואמות ומלא אנרגיה והזכירו לי קצת את ה-Power Puff Girls. הסתבר שהן הפאוור טריו Japan And I, חלק מהמשלחת הדרום אפריקאית ששוגרה לפרימוורה והן קיבלו הזדמנות להופיע בפסטיבל. הרגשתי ספונטני, אז עשיתי איתן (אנדי - תופים ושירה, אנג'לה - גיטרה ושירה, די די - באס ושירה) ראיון מהיר לברר איך סצינת האינדי ביוהנסבורג, מה היתה התוכנית הגאונית שלהן בהקמת הלהקה, ולמה כדאי לראות אותן בהופעה (מתנצל על העיכוב בפרסום).

מאיפה אתן בדרום אפריקה?
יוהנסבורג.
איך סצינת המוזיקה שם?
קטנה. להקות עוזרות אחת לשניה. ואין הרבה הזדמנויות לסגנון האלטרנטיבי שלנו.
אלטרנטיבי? האם ככה אתן מגדירות את המוזיקה שלכן?
כלומר, מחתרתי. המוזיקה שלנו מערבבת בין רוקנרול או Pאנק-סקא… קצת מהכל. ג'אז, סווינג. יש כאילו סצינות קטנות כאלה בג'ובורג אבל אף אחת מהן גדולה בשביל, אתה יודע, מוזיקת רוק. אז אתה מתחבר, כמובן, עם להקות אחרות. אנחנו חברות מאוד טובות עם די כל להקה בדרום אפריקה! וכולם מאוד עוזרים אחד לשני עד כמה שהם יכולים. אז, אם מישהו מקייפ טאון מופיע בג'ובורג נעזור להם לארגן הופעה, אולי הם ישנו אצלינו בלילה ואותו הדבר אם אנחנו נגיע לשם. כולם סוג של מכירים את כולם.

מגניב. אז איך הקמתם את הלהקה?
למעשה הלכנו לבית ספר ביחד, לאותו התיכון. רצינו ללכת להופעות בחינם, ונמאס לנו לשלם על כניסה. היינו קטינות, ולפעמים לא יכלנו להכנס כי הם בדקו תעודות זהות. אז, אמרנו, ובכן, בואו ננגן בלהקה, כי אז הם יהיו חייבים להכניס אותנו! תוכנית גאונית. וזה עבד! זה הביא אותנו כל הדרך לברצלונה!
אז מישהו שילם על הנסיעה הזו?

כמו הפרודיג'י, הם להקה.
אבל יש להם תופים!
עכשיו יש להם, אבל בהתחלה לא היו. היום יש להם להקה חיה, אבל בהתחלה זה היה בחור עם הסינטיסייזרים שלו.
אז זה משהו שונה בשבילי כי כשבאנו לפה היו שתי להקות, אנחנו ועוד להקה, אבל חוץ מזה יש די ג'ייז וזמרות.
מה אתן מקוות להשיג מהפסטיבל הזה?
כל מה שאנחנו יכולות.
עוד כניסות להופעות ואלכוהול!
לא… אנחנו מאוד רוצות לחזור לפה. אני חושבת שאנחנו לא רוצות שזה יהיה חד פעמי - כן, עשינו את זה פעם אחת - אנחנו ממש ממש מקוות לפגוש אנשים שיאהבו אותנו ויזמינו אותנו לפסטיבלים אחרים, וגם הופעות, כאילו הופעות עצמאיות, בכל מקום באירופה או אמריקה... ישראל! אנחנו מנסות לפרוץ לעולם! משהו שמחוץ לגבולות דרום אפריקה. הנסיעה הזו - מדהים בשבילינו לבוא לכאן. אם נוכל לנסוע לעוד מקומות, זה יהיה מדהים. אז אם אנחנו יכולות להתחבר לאנשים, שאולי אוהבים את המוזיקה שלנו, ואולי רוצים שהיא תהיה במקום אחר, זה יהיה… או כל אחד שרוצה לעזור לנו בכל מקום או כל דבר, זה יהיה נפלא.
תמיד אפשר לשלם להם כדי שהם יעזרו.
אנחנו נאבקות כדי לקיים את הלהקה, אף פעם לא נוכל לבוא לפה בעצמנו, זה למה לא באנו קודם לכם. אבל זה גם דרום אפריקה, מעט מאוד אמנים פשוט יכולים להיות שם אמנים, אתה חייב לעבוד.
אז מה אתן עושות כדי לממן את הרוקנרול?
אני (אנדי) מצלמת כפרילנסרית מתי שאני יכולה. היא (אנג'לה) שרה בפרסומות.
כן, עשיתי (אנג'לה) הרבה עבודה כזמרת. אני מנגנת גם בעוד להקה. אני עושה כמה דברים. אז כן. אנחנו עושות דברים בשביל לעשות כסף.
אנחנו די עושות ממון כדי שזה ימשיך לרוץ, אין לנו באמת כסף לקחת הביתה ולהנות מהרווחים. הכסף שאנחנו עושות נשאר בלהקה. אם אנחנו יוצאות לטור, אנחנו משתמשות בכסף שעשינו, אז אנחנו לא באמת לוקחות את הכסף.
כמה זמן הלהקה ביחד?
בערך תשע או עשר שנים.

התחלנו כשהיינו מאוד צעירות, היינו בנות 17, אז, כן.
אולי רק עוד שאלה אחת: למה כדאי לאנשים לבוא לראות אתכם בפרימוורה?
זה כיף לאללה. כן, אני חושבת שאנחנו מביאות סאונד אחר.
כולם אומרים שהם שונים. מה שונה לגביכן?
אני חושבת שאנחנו משתמשות בהרבה סגנונות והמוזיקה שלנו עושה איתם דברים מוזרים בצורה מפתיעה. זה נראה כאילו שאנחנו הולכות לכיוון אחד, וכאילו, לא, אנחנו הולכות לכיוון אחר, אז נראה לי שזה מפתיע אנשים. כנראה כי אנחנו בנות, ואנחנו מכסחות!

I was really impressed at Primavera by three girls who walked around the conference in matching outfits and lots of energy - kind of like the Power Puff Girls. Turns out they're the power trio Japan And I, a part of the South African team that was sent to Primavera and went on to perform in the festival. Feeling spontaneous, I did a quick interview with the band (Andy - drums + vocals, Angela - guitar + vocals, Dee Dee - bass guitar + vocals) to find out what's the indie scene like in Johannesburg, the genius plan behind their band, and why we should see them live (apologies for the delay in posting this).
So you're from South Africa and usually we don't hear about South African bands except one: Die Antwoord.
We were just speaking about that! Or Johnny Clegg.
Where in South Africa are you from?
Johannesburg.
What's the music scene like there?
It's small. Bands help each other out. And there's not a hell of a lot of opportunity, I would say, for our alternative genre.
Alternative? Is that how you define your music?
I mean, like underground. Our music, I would say, is like a mixture of rock’n’roll, or punk-ska... A little bit of everything. Jazzy, swingy. There's like these little scenes in Jo’burg but none of them are very big for, you know, rock music. So you end up making friends, obviously, with other bands. We're very good friends with pretty much every band in South Africa! And everyone really helps each other out as far as they can. So, if someone from Cape Town is playing in Jo’burg we'll help them organize a show, maybe they'll stay at our place for the night and same if we go down there. Everyone kind of knows everyone.
It sounds like a punk DIY kind of mentality.
Yeah, exactly!
Cool. So how did you guys get together and form your band?
We actually went to school together, the same high school. We wanted to get into shows for free, we were tired of paying entrance. We were underage, and we sometimes wouldn't get in because they would check our IDs. So, we were like, well, let's play in a band, because then they have to let us in! Genius plan. It worked! It brought us all the way to Barcelona!
So this trip is entirely paid for by someone?
Not a 100%, but very close to it. Kindly sponsored by IMEXSA. It's a South African organization: International Music Exchange Export of South Africa. It's actually funded by the Department of Arts and Cultures in South Africa, it's actually the Department of Creative Industry.
It's a very long name, so I think if I'm going to Google that there will be one result.
*Laughing* “Did you mean...” They brought out a few of us from South Africa and other delegates who are representing their bands. So they brought other people who are not playing, but are here to connect with other people, promote their bands and stuff. Actually, band-wise, it depends what you call a band. Because for us at home when we call the band a band, it's like there's guitar and a bass and the drums and the mic. But I've seen people call bands if it's an electro...like a group of people.
Like The Prodigy, they're a band.
But they have drums!
Now they do, but in the beginning they didn't. Now they have a live outfit, but at first it was a guy with his synthesizers.
So it's something different for me because when we came here, there's two bands, us and another band, but other than that DJs and singers.
What are you hoping to get out of coming to this festival?
Anything we can. *Laughing*
More entrances to shows and booz!
No… We really want to come back. I think we don't want this to be a once off - yeah, we did it once - we're really really hoping to meet people that like us and will invite us to other festivals, and just shows, like independant shows, anywhere in Europe or America...Israel! We've been trying to penetrate the world! Something that's outside of our boundaries of South Africa. This trip, it's amazing for us to come here. If we can go anywhere else, it would be amazing. So if we can make connections to people that, maybe like our music, and maybe wanna have it somewhere else, that would be... Or anybody that wants to help us out in whatever markets or whatever, that would be wonderful.
You can always pay them to help out.
We're a struggling band, we would never be able to come here by ourselves, that's why we haven't before. But it's also South Africa, very very few artists can just be artists, you have to have a job.
So what do you have to do to make guitars meet?
I (Andy) freelance photography when I can. She (Angela) does singing for adverts.
Yeah, I (Angela) did a lot of singing work, yeah. I play in another band at home as well. I got a few things. So yeah. We make ways to make money.
We kind of make financials to keep it going, we don't really make money to take home and enjoy our cut of the profits. The money we make we keep it in the band. If we go on tour, we use the money that we've made, so we don't really take the money.
How long has your band been together?
About 9 or 10 years.
Oh wow, that's quite a while!
We started when we were very young, we were 17, so, yeah.
Maybe just last question: why should people come to your show at Primavera?
It's a lot of fun. Yeah, I think we bring a different sound.
Everybody says they’re different. What's different about you?
I think we use like a lot of genres and our music kind of does weird things with kind of surprise you I think. Like we will go one way and like, no, we're going that way, so I guess that surprises people. I guess ‘cause we're girls, and we rock the fuck out!
Yeah, there's gonna be a bunch of other girls who do that, Sleater Kinney and Babes in Toyland and Kathleen Hanna's band. Are you into the whole Riot Grrrl movement?
Personally, no. There's not a lot of girl bands in South Africa, there's like two maybe: us and another band
You're leading the Riot Grrrl scene in South Africa!
Yeah, so we haven't really seen other girl bands, so I'm pretty excited to see them. But at the end of the day we are here on business, so hopefully we will find time to actually watch a lot other bands. I'd dig to see Babes in Toyland cause they're old school.
