בלי מחשבות מרושעות: ראיון עם Pretty Lightning

הפתיח של "True Detective" לא היה שלם בלי שיר הנושא "Far From Any Road" של הרכב הקאנטרי האלטרנטיבי The Handsome Family. עוד לפני שראינו טיפת זיעה אחת נוזלת על פניהם של וודי הארילסון ומת'יו מקונהי אנחנו כבר במצב רוח לאמריקנה קודרת מגואלת בדם. אבל דווקא להקה שרחוקה אלפי מיילים מאמריקה גרמה לי לחשוב על הסדרה, להקה גרמנית בשם Pretty Lightning. השירים המסוממים שלהם יכלו להתנגן בקלות בנסיעות על אותו כביש בודד לצד חופי לואיזיאנה. לא לחינם כתבו עליהם בעיתון המקומי Saarbrücker Zeitung "בלוז שפל ומלוכלך".

Pretty Lightning הם סבסטיאן הס (גיטרה) וכריסטיאן ברגהוף (תופים), שני חברי ילדות שגדלו יחד בזארבריקן במערב גרמניה. הם שיחררו את אלבום הבכורה "There Are Witches In The Woods" (ויש גם פסלי עץ שטניים ביער) לפני שנתיים, פולק פסיכדלי מכושף בבלוז. הזמנתי את סבסטיאן לראיון היכרות לכבוד שלוש הופעות שהם יתנו בסוף החודש בארץ.

מתי ואיך החלטתם להקים להקה?

"אני לא זוכר שהחלטנו 'בוא נקים להקה', אלא זה היה משהו שגדל עם הזמן. כריס ואני התחלנו לנגן ביחד בחצי השני של העשור הקודם (אני לא זוכר בדיוק מתי), כשהיינו לגמרי בקטע של גאראג' Pאנק ופשוט התחלנו להתאמן על גיטרה ותופים. התחלנו כמתחילים גמורים, ונראה לי שאנחנו עדיין כאלה :) דבר אחד הוביל למשנהו והבנו יום אחד שיש לנו להקה. אם אני יכול לסכם, האהבה שלנו לגאראג' רוקנרול וכו' בהחלט השפיעה עלינו להקים להקה בימים ההם".

איך השפיעה ההתבגרות בזארבריקן על המוזיקה שלכם?

"למעשה לא גדלנו בזארבריקן, בילינו את הילדות שלנו בעיר שכנה עוד יותר קטנה והמוזיקה תמיד היתה סוג של רכב מילוט. למרות שאני לא יכול להכחיש שלעיר שגדלת בה יש השפעה גדולה על מי שאתה ומה שאתה עושה, קשה לי להגיד איך החיים בעיר הזו השפיעו על המוזיקה שלנו. ברור שזה תלוי במיוחד באנשים שאתה פוגש, במיוחד בחברים, ופגשנו את שלנו בסוג של סצינת פאנק. אז אם אתה מתחיל בתור נער עם מוזיקת פאנק, אני מניח שלא תהיה, למשל, מוזיקאי פופ מיינסטרימי או סוחר מניות. ברור, יש יוצאים מן הכלל שמוכיחים את הכלל..."

יש בשירים שלכם וייב של קסם אפל מהעולם הישן. מאיפה ההשפעה הזו מגיעה?

"אם אתה רוצה ליצור וייב, אתה משתמש באמצעים אסתטיים, ואלה שאתה מתאר הם כביכול שלנו. זה לא בגלל שאנחנו אנשים עם ראש קודר, אני פשוט חושב שאנחנו נכנסים לוייבים כאלה בקלות. אם המוזיקה שלנו יוצרת תחושה של אופל, אז אני מקווה שזה בא בקטע טוב בלי 'מחשבות מרושעות' כמו שאנחנו מכירים מלהקות מטאל. בנוסף אנחנו צמד, רק תופים, גיטרה + שירה. זה פורמט נורא פשוט שיוצר אפשרויות 'מוגבלות', אבל במצב רוח אפל, אפילו לאור הקטן ביותר יכולה להיות השפעה גדולה".

תוכל לשתף את האירוע הכי מיסטי/מוזר שקרה לך אי פעם?

"אני מתנצל, אבל אין שום דבר שעולה לי כרגע על הדעת ששווה לספר".

למה נוכל לצפות מההופעות החיות שלכם בארץ?

"בעיקר חומר חדש מהאלבום הבא. חלק מהשירים שאולי אתם מכירים מאלבום הבכורה לא נשמעים לנו טוב מספיק בהופעה חיה ותמיד יהיו קטעים שלא ננגן. אנחנו לגמרי אסירי תודה על ההזמנה לנגן בישראל ונורא מתרגשים, אנחנו ממש מקווים שנוכל לספק משהו שאנשים יוכלו להנות ממנו".

The opening of "True Detective" would not be complete without the show's theme song "Far From Any Road" by alt country band The Handsome Family. Even before seeing one drop of sweat drip across the faces of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey we're already in the mood for dark and bloody Americana. Actually, a band that lies thousands of miles from America made me think about the show, a German band called Pretty Lightning. Their druggy songs could easily be played when driving on that lonesome road on the shores of Louisiana. Maybe that's why their local newspaper Saarbrücker Zeitung called the band's music "blues that's snotty and dirty".

Pretty Lightning are Sebastian Haas (guitar + vocals) and Christian Berghof (drums), two childhood friends that grew up in Saarbrücken in the west of Germany. They released their first album "There Are Witches In The Woods" (there are also satanic wooden sculptures in the woods) two years ago, psychedelic folk with a spell of the blues. I invited Sebastian to an introductory interview before they play three shows in Israel at the end of the month.

When and how did you decide to start a band?

"I don´t remember making a decision like 'let's form a band', but rather something that has been growing with the years. Chris and me started playing together in the second half of the last decade (I don't remember exactly), when we were totally into garage punk stuff and just begun practicing guitar and drums, so we really started as absolute beginners, and I suppose we still are:) Then one thing led to another and one day we realized that we had a band. If I sum it up, our love to garage rock'n'roll etc. definitely had it's impact on founding a band back in the days".

How did growing up in Saarbrücken impact your music?

"Actually we didn't grow up in Saarbrücken, we spent our youth in an even smaller neighboring small town and music has always been some kind of a getaway vehicle. Even if I can't deny that the city you've been growing up in has important influences on what you are and what you do, I can hardly tell how living in this town has affected our music. For sure it especially depends on the people you meet, mainly your friends and we met ours in some kind of punk scene. So if you start out as a teen having a focus on punk music, I guess you barely become a mainstream pop musician or a broker for example. Certainly, there are exceptions that prove the rule..."

There’s a dark magic old world kind of vibe in your songs. Where does this influence come from?

"If you want to create a vibe, you use aesthetic means and those you're describing are seemingly ours. It's not because we are dark-minded people, I think we just get into such vibes easily. If our music causes a feeling of darkness, than hopefully in a comfortable way without some kinds of 'evil thoughts' which we know from bloody-minded metal bands. Furthermore we are a duo, only drums, guitar + vocals, which is a quite simple set up that causes 'limited' options, but in a dark mood, even the tiniest light can have a huge effect".

Could you share the most mystical/strangest experience that you have ever had?

"I´m sorry, but there's truly nothing crossing my mind right now that would be worth telling".

What should we expect from your live shows in Israel?

"Mostly new stuff from our upcoming album. Some songs you might know from our debut album don't sound satisfying in a live set to us and there will always be tracks which will never be played live. We´re deeply grateful for the invitation to Israel and very excited, therefore we truly hope we can deliver something the people will enjoy".
